Emissions reduction targets
To continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.
We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to 15 tCO2e by 2030. This is a reduction of over 50%.
Carbon Reduction Projects
The following environmental management measures and projects will be completed or implemented following the 2024 baseline.
Zero to Landfill Policy
We actively strive to shape the wider impact of our service delivery and have adopted a company-wide ‘zero to landfill’ policy that prioritises sustainable and environmentally responsible waste management practices to minimise our carbon footprint. We’ve implemented a range of initiatives to achieve this goal.
One of our key initiatives has involved significantly reducing the use of single-use plastics throughout all our operations. We have taken a proactive approach to eliminating single-use plastic items opting instead for reusable or compostable alternatives made from sustainable materials. Moreover, we have introduced criteria to favour local suppliers that use eco-friendly materials such as biodegradable plastics, compostable containers, and recyclable paper products. By making this switch, we have managed to make meaningful reduction in the amount of plastic waste generated by our services.
We have also implemented a company-wide recycling policy to ensure that materials such as paper, cardboard, plastics, and metals are efficiently recycled. This policy is reinforced by our ongoing investment in robust recycling facilities to promote and facilitate consistent and effective waste sorting and recycling practices at every level of our business. This initiative is overseen by Quality Assurance Manager, Ravindra Gudena, who is tasked with coordinating waste reduction efforts, conducting regular waste audits, and implementing recycling training programs for our staff.
These comprehensive waste management strategies stand testament to our commitment to continuously reducing our carbon footprint and paving the way for a more sustainable future.
Office Practices
As a company, we are also highly conscious of the environmental impact of our administrative activities. We have therefore implemented a comprehensive system of practices to ensure that our office operations align with our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint:
- Paperless Operations: Our investment in digital transformation has enabled us to monitor our progresses towards our aim towards being ‘paper free’, which we have achieved with our main office, processes and procedures now being fully paper free. As a matter of policy, we now make use of digital document management systems via our completely digital Zoho Health system, including email correspondence and management tools. This has negated the demand for paper products and decreased the environmental impact associated with paper production and disposal.Â
- Energy-Efficient Appliances and Equipment: We have invested in energy-efficient appliances and equipment for our office. Our purchase decisions are guided by the recommendations of the Energy Saving Trust (EST), an independent organisation that provides information and endorsements to promote energy efficiency and sustainable energy use. Â
- Implementation of Energy Efficient Lighting: One of our key initiatives is the implementation of energy efficient lighting throughout our office spaces. As well as installing energy efficient lighting, we ensure that lights are only used when required, significantly reducing unnecessary energy consumption and, by extension, our corporate carbon footprint.Â
- Energy Conservation Measures: We have implemented various energy conservation measures to optimise energy usage in our office spaces. This includes utilising natural light wherever possible, employing energy-efficient lighting fixtures and ensuring that equipment operates in power-saving modes when not in active use. Additionally, we maintain optimal temperature settings for heating and cooling systems, conduct regular maintenance to ensure equipment efficiency, and encourage staff to adopt energy-saving practices in their daily routines.Â
Travel-Related Emissions
We are committed to reducing travel-related emissions as part of our efforts to minimise our carbon footprint. We employ various strategies to achieve this goal, focusing on optimising our transportation and logistical processes at every level. These strategies include the following:
- Virtual Meetings and Communications: We now schedule and conduct staff meetings virtually via Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams. Our digital means of communication allows audio and video calls, live conferencing, and direct content sharing from remote areas reducing the need for transport. Virtual meetings and real-time digital communication are more environmentally friendly as they reduce emissions caused by travel and associated consumption. In addition, we continually assess the environmental impact of data transmission and energy consumption for the use of virtual events to ensure the lowest relative cost.Â
- Lowering Emission of Company Car: Our main company vehicle is certified to be Euro 6 Compliant WLTP Hybrid, and we will replace this with a fully electric vehicle by 2030, significantly reducing our Scope 1 output. In addition, we ensure that where fossil fuels are required at present, we are using them as efficiently as possible with the minimum amount of carbon emissions produced.  Â
- Strategic Route Planning: We utilise advanced route planning software Google Maps to analyse factors such as traffic patterns, distance and delivery schedules for all suppliers and administration staff. The software allows us to optimise our business routes, ensuring that the company vehicle takes the most efficient paths to their destinations. By minimising travel time and distance, we decrease fuel consumption and emissions associated with transportation.Â
- Eco-Friendly Driving Practices: We promote eco-friendly driving practices among all staff members. Through training programmes and regular reminders, we encourage drivers to adopt fuel-efficient driving habits. This includes maintaining steady speeds, avoiding excessive idling, and minimising sudden accelerations and braking. By adhering to these practices, our drivers contribute to reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions during their journeys.Â
- Local Sourcing: Another key aspect of our carbon reduction strategy is sourcing locally wherever possible. By sourcing ingredients, supplies and products from local suppliers and producers, we minimise the need for long-distance transportation. This not only reduces carbon emissions associated with transportation but also supports local economies and reduces our environmental impact. In addition, we select suppliers who have an up-to-date Carbon Reduction Plan and can provide us with updates.
- Encouraging Use Public Transport: We encourage administrative and management staff to utilise public transport wherever possible, providing incentives such as weekly transport allowances, free bus passes, and cycle to work schemes.Â
We will implement the following further measures during contract delivery:
Raising Waste Reduction Awareness
Throughout this contract, we will conduct talks and training sessions on waste reduction, aiming to raise awareness and promote sustainable practices among our staff. These sessions will cover various aspects of waste reduction, including proper sorting and disposal techniques, as well as strategies to minimise waste generation in our daily operations. By empowering our employees with the knowledge and tools to reduce waste, we are confident in our ability to make significant progress towards our carbon reduction goals.
To reinforce these efforts, we will continue to engage with suppliers and subcontractors, advising them on the financial and environmental implications of waste. Through workshops and seminars, we will share best practices for reducing waste to landfill, such as accurate forecasting and engaging in the circular economy. By highlighting the economic benefits of waste reduction, such as cost savings through reduced purchasing and disposal costs, we aim to motivate suppliers, providers, and partners to adopt more sustainable practices.
Furthermore, we will emphasise the environmental impact of waste, particularly its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and landfill pollution. By quantifying the carbon footprint associated with landfill waste and illustrating its environmental consequences, we seek to inspire caterers to take proactive steps to minimise waste throughout their operations.
In addition to talks and training sessions, we will implement practical measures to reduce waste, such as composting organic waste and donating to local charities. By addressing waste reduction from multiple angles and fostering a culture of sustainability within our organisation and among our partners, we are confident in our ability to make meaningful strides towards our carbon reduction goals.
Protecting and Developing Green Spaces
Over the contract, we will commit to maintaining green spaces around the contract region and community. This initiative is aimed at enhancing our environmental sustainability efforts while creating healthier and more pleasant working environments for our employees. Our initiatives will include the following:
- Contributing to Green Wall Initiatives: One aspect of our plan involves assistance in local projects involved in creating green wall spaces within the contract region. Green walls offer numerous benefits, including improved air quality, noise reduction, and temperature regulation. By covering vertical surfaces with vegetation, we can mitigate the urban heat island effect and reduce energy consumption for cooling during hot weather. We will reach out within 3 months of contract commencement to identify green wall projects and determine funding and/or allotted volunteer hours.
- Environmental Projects: We will look to environmental projects in and around the local area to provide funding and/or volunteering hours to further increase carbon sequestration and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during photosynthesis, helping to mitigate climate change. Additionally, green spaces promote biodiversity and ecosystem services, further enhancing the ecological resilience of our surroundings. This will include park development, maintenance, and rejuvenation projects.Â
- Employee Wellbeing: Beyond their environmental benefits, green spaces also have positive effects on employee wellbeing and productivity. Research has shown that exposure to nature can reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance cognitive function. By creating green spaces within our workplace, we will prioritise the health and wellbeing of our employees, fostering a more vibrant and enjoyable work environment.Â
Through our contributions to maintaining and developing green spaces, we intend to demonstrate our commitment to sustainability, employee wellbeing, and environmental stewardship. We believe that investing in green infrastructure is not only beneficial for our business but also for the communities and ecosystems in which we operate.
